The word diet has more than one meaning. One of its definitions is a meeting or gathering. A gathering of potentates of the Holy Roman Empire took place in 1521 in a German town called Worms. This gathering is referred to as The Diet of Worms. One of the items on the agenda was the issue of Martin Luther and his writings. Luther was ordered to appear before the group and was promised safe passage, though the plan was to arrest him when his appearance ended. He managed to slip away and the rest is history. Martin Luther is not what comes to mind when the topic of the day in History 101 is Diet of Worms.
