I used the quotation from the fairy tale, Jack and the Beanstalk, where the giant is looking for Jack, who is hiding, and roars: "Fee-fi-fo-fum, I smell the blood of an Englishman". I was very young when that scene was first read to me and I had visions of a frightful, fierce and angry giant, tromping around with his incredible sense of smell. So incredible that he could smell blood when it was still inside the Englishman (the implication being that soon the blood would be outside the Englishman). I had an added fear when I heard this because I knew that my own blood contained 50% English blood.

I used my calm-and-collected-easy-going brother Kent, whose blood is also 50% English, as my model for the giant.
