Every illustration for Humpty Dumpty I've ever seen shows Humpty as an egg with arms and legs. So I grew up believing Humpty was an egg. No wonder nobody sympathizes with Humpty! Nowhere in the rhyme does it mention that Humpty is an egg. I've imagined the poor guy later, in the autumn of his years, having spent his life living with failed surgical attempts. Imagine having horses attempt surgery on you!
