My first reaction to this nursery rhyme was one of abject terror and insomnia. The nursery rhyme suggested that if I fell asleep I may never wake up and I wasn't certain that I really wanted the "Lord" to take my soul (whatever that was).

NOW I LAY ME DOWN TO SLEEP

Now I lay me down to sleep,

I pray the Lord my soul to keep;

And if I die before I wake,

I pray the Lord my soul to take.
