I remember asking myself what those children had done to deserve their sentence of reduced rations and a beating. Years later I realized they were blameless and that this scenario fit the recipe for child abuse. Take one adult, incapable of handling stress without coming unglued; add a short temper; blend a large helping of fertility; mix a healthy sexual appetite; stir in an ignorance of birth control and top it off with a cramped living space, and you have the makings of child abuse.
