Treehoppers are related to cicadas and there are a wide variety of treehoppers all over the world, mostly in warmer climates. Their common helmet, topped with knobs (and in many species spikes and bristles) have evolved as camouflage to resemble thorns. Treehoppers pierce stems of hardwood trees and feed on the sap. The excess sap attracts ants and some species have nurtured relationships with ants, who provide protection from predators.
