The Laxdaela Saga contains stories and complicated genealogies of the Vikings who frequently left their Scandinavian homeland in search of new real estate. Many sailed for the British Isles, raping and pillaging along the way, as the saying goes. The characters described in the saga had names which reflected some element of their character or their physical appearance. During the ninth century AD there was a powerful Viking warrior named Unn the Deep-Minded who was the daughter of Ketill Flatnose. Unn was basically a good person who led her clan of warriors from Norway to the Orkneys, then to the Faroe Isles and finally to Iceland. As she reached the end of her military career, in the winter of her life, she gathered her loyal followers together for a wedding party and postponed her death until she had divided up all her properties amongst the faithful. When the business was concluded she took her leave and went to bed for a final sleep.
