Session A:  Researching & Writing Northern History

This opening session provides a framework for general northern historical research, for all communities, and can be utilised to develop your family history research. The Co-Presenters, Dr. David Leonard and Dr. Don Wetherell, have worked in historical research for well over a decade each, and are both enthusiastic about giving us some appreciation of all the avenues that are available in their approach to comprehensive historical research. The sources and methodology discussed include such as: community and corporate histories, transportation, economic development, and even some research publishing tips.

David Leonard was born and raised in the Peace River Country. He received his B.A. and M.A. in History from the University of Alberta, and his Ph.D. in Modern Irish History from the University of Sheffield. He is a professional archivist and has served as the first Territorial Archivist of the Northwest Territories (1978-81) and as the Provincial Archivist of Alberta (1993-96). He is the author of several works on Northern Alberta History and is currently the Project Historian for Northern Alberta for the Alberta Historic Sites Service.

Don Wetherell lives in Edmonton. He earned his Ph.D. in history from Queen’s University in Kingston. His most recent book, co-authored with Irene Kmet, is a history of northern Alberta, 1890-1950, which will be published later this year.
