Session C: Archival Preservation/Conservation Techniques for Family Treasures
This unique session has been added to the series of Research Workshops as an aid to personal family history research, and for an appreciation of the valuable public service which our archives provide us all by taking special care of the community treasures, without which we would not be able to appreciate our past history. We can all make use of this expert's knowledge, applying the techniques of archival preservation and conservation to our family treasures. Brock Silversides has offered to reveal these techniques to us as he attends the Treaty 8 Centennial event, bringing with him some of his work, the commemorative display for the Spirit of the Peace Museums Associations' Exhibit on the Spirit and Meaning of Treaty #8 (based on the first-hand account by Charles Mair, together with the rarely viewed NWMP photographs from the Commissions' tours in 1899).
Brock Silversides currently holds the position of Collections Achivist with the Saskatchewan Archives Board. His educational background includes degrees from the University of Saskatchewan (B.A.) and University of Western Ontario (M.L.S.). Brock has worked for the Saskatoon Public Library and National Library of Canada. For nine years, he was the Chief Archivist of Audio-Visual & Technical Services at the Provincial Archives of Alberta. He has lectured (as Guest and Sessional Instructor) at the Universities of Saskatchewan and Alberta, as well as found the time to write 6 books (another is due this Fall of 1999), which includes Face Pullers, an examination of how First Nations were photographed over time by non-Aboriginal photographers, and how this has defined their popular image.
