Jean Elizabeth MURRAY
(Angus1, John2)
and
Alexander WOODWORTH

Jean Elizabeth Murray was born 25th September 1880 at Mount Thom in Pictou County, Nova Scotia.  At the time of her birth the family already had three sons.

The 1881 Census of Mount Thom lists her under the name Elizabeth J., female, age 6/12 (born Sep). In the 1891 Census of Mount Thom she became Jane, female, age 10 and in 1901 she was Janie, female, born 25 Sept. 1880, age 20.

John Murray, Jean’s father died in 1894.  The family members stayed on the farm until sometime after 1901 and then went west at various times before1912. Jean was on the 1906 Census with her Uncle Hugh McPherson in Manitoba and was listed as servant.

It is not known when Jean returned to Nova Scotia.  Her Aunt, Mary Murray, was a housekeeper for Charlotte Woodworth and this connection led to an acquaintance between Jean Murray and Alexander “Sandy” Woodworth and led to their marriage in Saint John, New Brunswick on 22 Aug 1917.  She visited Rosthern, Saskatchewan sometime in 1917 and Alex doesn’t appear in the photos taken at that time. Perhaps she visited just before her marriage.

Alexander Woodworth was born 17 July 1863 in Nova Scotia.  In 1871 he was enumerated  with his parents, James and Charlotte Woodworth, and three sisters and two brothers at Gay’s River, Nova Scotia.  He was also with his parent’s for the 1881 and 1891 census.  By 1901 his mother was a widow and she and Alexander were living together with Benjamin Donald listed as Dom (domestic help?).

After marriage Sandy and Jean lived in Milford in the home built by his cousin Amos Woodworth.

After only a few years of marriage Sandy died 7 Jan. 1926 following a heavy cold with pleurisy.

The Pictou Advocate of 16 Jan 1926 carried the following obituary:

From Lovell’s NS Directory For 1871

Milford Station – A station of the Nova Scotia railway, situated in the township of Douglas, county of Hants. …  Distant from Halifax 35 miles, fare $1.05.  Mail daily.  Population about 175.  Formerly called Wickwire’s Station
A more recent directory says Milford is on Highway 102, halfway between Dartmouth and Truro, north of Elmsdale and Lantz.  Note that the address Milford Station is simply the name of the Mildord post office, and that the correct name is Milford, Hants County, NS.
