Why did A. H. Murray keep a clipping with a death notice for William V. Murray? There is likely no relationship between the Angus Murray/Elizabeth McDonald family and William V. Murray. However, since a clipping containing his death notice was found in a book belonging to A. H. Murray (grandson of Angus Murray and Elizabeth McDonald) information about William has been researched. William Valentine Murray was born the 1st December 1887 at
Montrose, Forfar, Scotland. He was in Montrose at the time of the 1891
census (3 years old), and on the 1901 census as Willie (13 years old).
. In 1910 (according to the 1911 census for Winnipeg, Manitoba)
he emigrated to Canada where he was a
baggage man or baggage porter. On 5 April 1912 he married Elisabeth Mollison in Winnipeg. On their marriage registration her residence was listed as Montrose. They lived at 420 Alexander Ave. in Winnipeg, Manitoba. William enlisted with the 78th Overseas Battalion on the 17th July 1915 and on the 20th May 1916 he left Canada for England. The following August he went to France where he was killed in action on the 9th April 1917. Presumably he was killed in the storming of Vimy Ridge. He was buried in the CANADIAN CEMETERY No.2, NEUVILLE - ST. VAAST, Pas de Calais, France Sp. Mem. "B". Neuville-St. Vaast is a village about 6 kilometers north of
Arras and 1 kilometre east of the main road from Arras to Bethune. The
Cemetery is a further 2.5 kilometres north of the village on a spur road
turning left from the road Givenchy-en-Gohelle. The spur road is about 1
kilometer south of the Canadian Memorial at Vimy. Elizabeth Murray went back to Montrose and on the Commonwealth War Graves Commision write-up about William, she was living at 4, St. John's Place, Montrose, Angus. Annie Murray Ann Murray was born on the 21st April 1859 at Little Thornton in the Parish of Marykirk, Kincardine, Scotland. On the 1891 census she gave her birthplace as Fettercairn. She was the mother of at least four children: Helen Cowie McDonald (born 27 July 1881), Alexander Muray (born 1883), Isabella Moir Murray (born 1886) as well as William V. Murray. Robert Murray and Elisabeth Rae Robert Murray was born 1 Sep. 1833 at Fettercairn, Kincardine, Scotland. He married Elisabeth Rae on the 13 Dec. 1856 at Marykirk, Kincardine, Scotland. They raised a large family: Betsy, Jean A., Robert, Ann, Elisabeth,Alexander, Susan, Christina, John and Robert. The family lived in Fettercairn until at least 1871 although Robert (husband) was not listed on the 1871 census. Elizabeth and her children were enumerated with Robert's widowed mother, Ann. By 1881 Robert, Elizabeth and children were living in Montrose. Alex Murray and Anne Cooper Alex Murray was born about 1802 in the parish of Dun, in the
county of Forfar (Angus). He came to Fettercairn about 1821. He and Ann
had the following children: Ann (born about1825), Elizabeth (born 1826),
Jane (born about 1827 and died in 1827 at 4 or 5 weeks), Christine (born
1828), Susan ( born 1831 and Robert (born 1833. Alex died 5 March 1855
at Fettercairn. John Murray and Susan Murray If there is any connection between the Angus Murray/Elizabeth McDonald family it would be in this generation. Unfortunately all we know about John Murray is that he was a Tailor and died before 1855. His wife Susan was also a Murray by birth and she died before 1855. Did John and Susan come from Sutherland?
