GEORGIANA MURRAY FRASER
(ANGUS1, ISABEL2)
and
JAMES H. TURNBULL

Georgiana Murray Fraser was the daughter of Isobel Murray and James Fraser. She was raised in Mount Thom, Pictou County, Nova Scotia and lived on the farm with her family.

The only record we have of her time spent in Nova Scotia is the 1871 census which gives her age as 18 years. It also lists her birthplace as Scotland (with ditto marks to her father), but it is likely that this was an error on the part of the census taker.

Georgiana's parents left Nova Scotia and moved to Fall River, Massachusetts about 1872. It is not clear if Georgiana went with them. There is no record of her in Fall River until 1908. However on the later census records her date of immigration to the U.S. was 1869 or 1870. If she wasn't in Fall River, she was someplace in the U.S.

James Hume Turnbull was born on the 1st July 1842 at Hyndlee, Roxburgh, Scotland. Hyndlee is in the parish of Southdean. On the 1851 census he is listed with his family as follows:

William Turnbull, Head, Married, age 42, Shepherd, born England
Mary Turnbull, Wife, Married, age 41, born Jedburgh, Roxburgh
Jane Turnbull, Daughter, unmarried, age 19, Scholar, born Jedburgh,Roxburgh
Richard Turnbull, Son, unmarried, age 10, Scholar, born Southdean,
Roxburgh                       James Turnbull, Son, age 8, Scholar, born Southdean, Roxburgh
Andrew Turnbull, Son, age 6, Scholar, born Southdean Roxburgh
John Turnbull, Son, age 4, born Southdean, Roxburgh
Robert Turnbull, Son, 8 mos., born Southdean, Roxburgh

James was in the United States by 1869 where he attended Monmouth College and Monmouth Seminary (in Illinois) and was licenced by Monmouth Presbytery on the 10th April 1871.

James was ordained in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and was in Tranquility, Iowa from 19 June 72 - 6 October 1875.

From Iowa, James moved back east to Fall River, Massachusetts where he was pastor of the United Presbyterian Church which was located at Pearl Street and Annawan.

Reverend Turnbull lived at various addresses in Fall River (boarded at 29 Rock in 1878 and was a householder at 53 Eight Rod Way in 1880), but from 1882 to 1885 he lived at 12 Cottage.

In 1884 the householder at 11 Cottage was Isabella Fraser, widow, and her family which likely included Georgiana.

Was it coincidence or was it by design that the Frasers lived next door to Reverend Turnbull? Whatever the case, Georgiana Fraser and James H. Turnbull were married about 1885.

Not too long after the marriage, the Turnbulls left Fall River and took up residence in Stellarton, Nova Scotia where Rev. Turnbull served at Sharon Presbyterian Church.

At the time of the 1891 Census they lived in a two storey wooden house with eleven rooms. They had 2 children at that time. However, the census information gives rise to some questions as the oldest child is listed as age 13 and born in the U.S.

1891 Pictou Co. Sub. Dist. Z, Stellarton, p. 95

Turnbul, John H. age 48, b. Scotland , parents b. Scotland, Clergyman
Turnbul, Georgiana, age 38, wife, b. N.S., parents b. N.S.
Turnbul, John Willson age 13, son, born U.S., Father born Scotland, Mother born N.S.
Turnbul, James Fraser, age 3, son , born N.S., Father born Scotland, Mother born N.S.

William Hall Turnbull was christened in the Sharon Church and his baptism was recorded as follows:

baptism by Rev. J. H. Turnbull
William Hall Turnbull, born 18 July 1892, bapt. 13 Oct. 1892, son of J.H. and G. M. Turnbull

One other child was born to the Turnbulls while they were in Stellerton. Isabel F. Turnbull was born in Sep. 1893.

In 1896 the Turnbulls returned to the United States where Rev. Turnbull took up a position in Hamden, New York.

There is a record of the family on the 1900 Census of Hamden Town, Delaware Co., New York. On this census there were only three children. John Willson was not with them. The information on the census also says that Georgiana has had four children born to her and only three were now living.

Rev. James H. Turnbull died sometime between 1900 and 1908 probably in New York, perhaps in Hamden. Georgiana brought her family back to Fall River by 1908. She lived in Fall River until her death on the 25th October 1939.

The Fall River Herald News carried her obituary on the 28 Oct, 1939:

Mrs. G. M. Turnbull

Funeral services for Mrs. Georgiana M. Turnbull, widow of Rev. James H. Turnbull  were held at 2 yesterday afternoon at her home, 22 Oakland Street. Rev. Dr. Clarence E. Hellens, pastor of the Central Congregational Church, officiated. Interment was in Oak Grove Cemetery. Bearers were Merritt W. Aborn, John R. Hallas, Elmer B. Young, Robert L. Clarke, Joseph M. Hathaway and Dr. William Mason

The Pictou Advocate also carried an obituary on the 2nd of Nov. 1939

James F. Turnbull lived in Fall River with his mother until 1910 when he returned to Hamden, N.Y.  He was back in Fall River in 1912 and by 1914 had again returned to Hamden, N.Y. This time he stayed away until about 1925 and then he was continually in Fall River until his death on the 22 July
1956. Over the years he had been a clerk, a salesman, and a district sales manager, some of the time being in the insurance business.

James was a member of the Masonic Lodge at Binghamton, New York and was a Shriner as well.

The Fall River Herald News carried the following obituary:

James F. Turnbull Funeral services for James F. turnbull of 27 Farnum Street, were held  yesterday afternoon at 2 in the Hathaway Home for Funerals. Rev. Harry L. Meyer of the Congregational Church, Harwich Center, formerly of Central Congregatonal Church in this city, officiated. The bearers were Walter Fish, Everett W. Wiley, Richard L. Wonson, Merritt W. Aborn and Merton Vestall. Interment was in Oak Grove Cemetery on the 25th July 1956

William H. Turnbull stayed at home in Fall River until 1922 when he removed to Rochester, N. Y. There are two Rochesters in New York, and William lived in the larger Rochester which is on the south shore of Lake Ontario..

Before he left Fall River William served in the armed forces with the rank of lieutenant.

He was married to Ruth Folsom Hunter in Buffalo, New York on June 5, 1926 and they had two daughters.

His occupation was Dental Technician.

William H. Turnbull died at Pompano Beach, Broward Co., Florida on the 16th November, 1969. His address at the time of death was 116 S.E. 14th Place, Deerfield Beach, Florida.  His wife died in Pompano Beach, Florida on 14th Sep. 1989.

Isabel F. Turnbull was educated as a school teacher. She was a student until approximately 1914 when she began teaching school. She lived at home with her mother and brothers.

At the end of the first world war she was a Phone Operator for a couple of years, but by 1919 she was teaching sewing in the public schools.

The family moved from its residence at 533 Hanover to 329 Winter in 1925 and she was still teaching sewing in the public schools. In 1927 she was teaching at James M. Morton Jr. High School where she taught for many years (at least until 1941). During this time the family made one more move to 22 Oakland. Her mother died in 1939 and she continued to live in the family
home with her brother until at least 1941.

At a date subsequent to 1941, Isabel was married to Robert M. Wiley. When her brother James died she was living at 1724 Crandall Rd., Tiv.  Tiv. was likely the abbreviation for Tiverton, Rhode Island which is fairly close to Fall River. Isabel was not married at age 48, so it is unlikely that she had a family.
