Angus Sellers was the son of
Margaret Murray and Malcolm Sillers. He was born 10 July 1847 at Six
Mile Brook in Pictou County, Nova Scotia.
The Siller Family lived in various locations in Pictou County and Colchester County while Angus was growing up. (See Volume 3 # 2.) On the 23rd July 1864 Angus, who was then twenty-seven years old married eighteen year old Christy McKenzie. On his marriage registration his name was spelled Sillers, but he later used Sellers. Angus and Christy had six children born in Nova Scotia: Minnie (1875 - 1920), Emma (1877 - 1941), Henry (1880 - 1948), Christina "Tena" (1881 - 1949), William (1883 - 1954), Elizabeth Ann "Bannie" (1890 - 1930). In November, 1892 when the youngest child was about two years old, Angus and Christy moved their family from Nova Scotia to Manitoba. They came west with Angus's parents, Malcolm and Margaret Sillers, Angus's sisters, Elizabeth Jane (Libbie) Sillers and Jessie Murray, and Jessie's daughter, Marguerite. Angus chose land south-east of Souris, Manitoba, but they all spent the winter of 1892-93 at the home of Angus's sister and brother-in-law, Margaret and Hugh McPherson.. What a house full that was! The three generations included Malcolm and Margaret Sillers as the first generation, Margaret and Hugh McPherson, Angus and Christina Sellers, Jessie Murray, and Elizabeth Jane Sillers as the second generation, and the four McPherson children, six Sellers children and one Murray daughter as the third generation. The following taken from The Brandon Hills Story : a publication marking the centenary of the community, July 1979 / [Brandon Hills History Committee] gives some of the cousins feeling about sharing the same house. The experience of having seven cousins as well as their grandparents with them for nearly a year made a deep impression on the four McPherson children and accounts for the lasting friendship within the group. In the spring of 1893 Angus came over to the land he had title of . It was said that he chose Section 5, Township 7, Range 20 because the grass was taller there than on the other land he had looked at. Because of that he thought the soil must be better. The west half of 5-7-20 is in the Lily district and the east half is in the Bunclody district. Angus built a one room house to live in until he got the bigger house built. He made little beds to slide under larger ones so they would have room to walk around during the day. Eventually he got a proper house and good farm buildings built. The east half of 5-7-20 stayed in the Sellers family for one hundred years. Hugh McPherson bought the N.W. quarter in 1891 and the west half was owned by the McPhersons until 1902. Angus and Christy's family all married except Henry. He remained on the family farm until 1946 and then he retired to Souris. He is buried in the Souris Glenwood Cemetery. His tombstone reads: Henry Sellers born Pictou, N.S., 31 March 1879 died 12 Feb 1948. Minnie married Charles McKeen, had one daughter, two grand-daughters and one grandson. The McKeens lived in Saskatchewan. However, a tombstone in the Souris Glenwood Cemetery has the following inscription: Minnie Sellers, wife of C.R. McKeen, died July 9, 1920 aged 45 years. Emma married John McKinnon, had two sons and a daughter and they lived at Minto, Manitoba. Christina (Tena) married Jack Kirbyson, had three daughters and four sons and lived at Fairfax, Manitoba. William married Jennie Baillie, originally from Nova Scotia. They stayed within two miles of the home farm and had three daughters and a son. Elizabeth Ann (Bannie) married Hugh Wilson and lived in Saskatchewan. They had no family. Bannie was also buried in Souris Glenwood Cemetery. Following is the inscription on her tombstone: SELLERS / WILSON Bannie Sellers Wife of Hugh Wilson born Pictou, N.S. January 14, 1890 died March 21, 1939 Christy Sellers died in 1918 and Angus followed in 1924. Following are the inscriptions from their tombstones in the Souris Glenwood Cemetery: MCKENZIE / SELLERS Christina McKenzie wife of Angus Sellers died May 3, 1918 aged 62 years Angus Sellers born Pictou, N.S. b. July 10, 1847 d. 27 Nov. 1924 The home farm eventually became the property of William's son, Angus, but he passed away on March 20, 1977 and so it is now owned by his widow, Margaret of Toronto. However, the farm is rented to William's grandson, Murray Smith who lives on the farm where William and Jennie lived. On July 3rd, 1993 the Sellers family gathered to celebrate one hundred years of the farm which Angus Sellers became the owner of on Nov. 28, 1892. There were 90 relatives in attendance. From Christy's marriage certificate we find that her father was John McKenzie, a farmer and her mother was Christy Sutherland. Christy's residence was River John. On the 1871 census of Pictou County, Nova Scotia the family that fits is located at Cape John where Christy lived after her marriage. She was married at River John. In the Illustrated Historical Atlas of Pictou County 1879, River John is described as "lying on a river and bay known by the name of Deception River, near Cape John.... It can be assumed that the McKenzie's lived in between River John and Cape John. The 1871 census information is as follows: Cape John 1-175-182 (April 21) McKenzie, John (M 54 md farmer) Christy (F 51 Md) Mary (F 25) Daniel (M 20 blacksmith) Robert (M 18 Labourer) William ( M 16) Christy (F 15) Jessie (F 12) Margaret (F 10) Alexander (M 6) All born N.S. All origins: Scotch. Religion: all, Church of Scotland Family sources say that John McKenzie was born at Blue Mountain in 1818 and died 1899.in Nova Scotia. His parents were Donald McKenzie who was born at Stornoway, Scotland and Betsy Ross who was born in Nova Scotia. |
