A Barber


Paul this barber hunchback
this hunchback snipping snort -
could barely walk
could barely lift the scissors
smelling rum
never been to Peurto Rico.
Like it flat in the back or tapered?
Hunchback stooping, sitting on a stool;
turn the chair –
you see I've got two –
shift the piece.
What calm, what acute, all snip-snip in squinting veins.
Italy, 1952,
haven't moved since –
a lawyer! – those lawyers are all just liars,
liars that'll be ten bucks,
now see someone's in my shop.
What says this liar?
It says, "Not Short, Just Regular"
in a woman's hand
and the hunchback barber says
"Just give me your money then and leave - Heh!"
and the someone laughs not sure
whether he's been duped.
Sure enough, he'll get his cut,
just so, not short.
