GEN: Related to Henry Ford in some way based on family letters and postcards.
GEN: About 1867, Susanna's brother, John FORD arrived in Victoria and came to South Australia where he spent his time farming or
GEN: hotel keeping between One Tree Hill, Fords and the far north. John married Mary Ann Hyde, daughter of John Hyde, after whom
GEN: Hyde Park in Adelaide is named.
GEN: Both Susanna and her brother John were related to Henry Ford, the inventor of the model T ford motor car. They must have
GEN: corresponded at some time, because James Purdie named later properties 'Fairview Farm' at Melrose and 'Fairview Park Farm' at
GEN: Booleroo, while in the U.S. Henry Ford named his home 'Fairview' and cars Fairlane and Fairmont.
DEATH: SUSANNA PURDIE died at Smithfield in 1910 at 82 and was buried at One Tree Hill on land donated by James for a cemetery.
DEATH: By all accounts she was quite a character as there was an article about her in the local paper.

DEATH: Susanna Purdie died on Wednesday last at her residence at Smithfield at the age of 82 years. She was sitting in a chair
DEATH: conversing with visitors until 6.00 p.m. on the day of her death. A neighbour called to make her tea about 7.00 p.m. and
DEATH: found her dead in a chair, death having been due to heart failure.
DEATH: Mrs. Purdie has been a resident of Smithfield for 29 years, and prior to her death earned her living by nursing and sewing.
DEATH: She had been in
DEATH: receipt of an old age pension and when the first payment of 14 pounds was made, she banked 10 pounds for her funeral expenses
DEATH: or any other
DEATH: contingency. With the balance she purchased an easy chair and necessities of life.
DEATH: She was much respected by the residents of Smithfield. Mrs.
DEATH: Purdie was born near Glasgow, Scotland and arrived in South Australia in 1849. Her husband predeceased her by 17 years. She
DEATH: left 2 sons and 3 daughters. John G. Purdie of Bute, Mr. James Purdie of One Tree Hill, Mrs.J. Grigg of South Broken Hill,
DEATH: Mrs. A.W. Morrison of Anama and Mrs. W. Hagan of Davington. She also left 41 grandchildren and 35 great grandchildren.
DEATH: The train ran through her property and she used to open the gates for it to pass through. When the train driver found the gates
DEATH: closed they investigated and found her dead.

GEN: ONE TREE HILL HISTORY:
GEN: ONE TREE HILL takes its name from the One Tree Hill Inn licensed in 1851, which was the meeting place of the District Council
GEN: of Munno Para for many years.
GEN: The settement commenced 1867 on land owned by James Purdie. On September 26th, 1866, the Gawler Wesleyan Circuit decided that
GEN: application be made for permission to build chapels at One Tree Hill, Pimberton Plains and Willaston.. and on December 26th,
GEN: 1866 that One Tree Hill be taken up and preaching established at once. In this way, Methodism came to One Tree Hill.
GEN: Land on which the church is built was a government grant to William Henry Gantrell, on December 4th, 1852 by Sir Henry Fox
GEN: Young, Governor of South Australia at that time. On March 17th 1855, the land was transferred to James Purdie, farmer, who
GEN: transferred the land to the trustrees of the Methodist Church of One Tree Hill on July 23rd, 1867 at a cost of 5 pounds.
GEN: The Church foundation stone was laid on August 13th 1867. In 1992, on the 125th anniversary of the Church, a celebration was
GEN: held and the Church thrives today under the name of One Tree Hill Uniting Church.
GEN: PURDIE LANDHOLDINGS:
GEN: James Purdie owned land Hundred of Everard 30-1-18874 near Mt. Templeton via Balaklava, South Australia.
GEN: He owned land between Murraytown and Melrose (near Wild Dog Creek).
GEN: He purchased sections 49 and 20 hundred of Booleroo 2--11-1875. On 7-8-1878 the land was transferred to his son, John Gardiner
GEN: Purdie and in 1886 it was transferred to Phillip Wade.
