GEN: Emigrated to New Aealand on the vessell "Adelaide" which departed Grass End, England, September 18, 1839 under the command of
GEN: Captain William Campbell, with 147 souls on board.
GEN: They arrived in Wellington on March 7 1840, nearly 6 months later.
GEN: Wilmott H. Tilke was on board but apparently travelling under the name Ann Tilke.
GEN: The name Ann comes from the original New Zealand Company list and is confirmed by the transcription of the Adelaide list from
GEN: the same source in "Early Wellington".
GEN: This also points out that during the voyage she was under the care of Mrs Evans, the wife of Dr G S Evans. Also in "Early
GEN: Wellington" is an entry for the 1841 marriage of a Lawrence (spelt Laurance on the passenger list in the same publication) to
GEN: a Miss Tilke "first schoolmistress at Weslyan Church, Te Aro." Also Joseph's age on the original documents is given as 21.
GEN: Thus, Ann Tilke is actually Wilmott Huxtable Tilke who married Joseph Lawrance. Perhaps she was more comfortable with the
GEN: simpler name.
BURIAL: Headstone at Old Cemetery Mount Gambier reads: "JOSEPH LAWRANCE born in Cornwall Sept 1816 died Mount Gambier May 2nd 1869".

GEN: After marriage in Wellington New Zealand they moved to Australia and settled at Parramatta, N.S.W near Sydney.
GEN: Joseph was a surveyor and as such was away from the family a great deal.
GEN: January 1848 the whole family moved to Adelaide area.
