GEN: Wilmott Huxtable Tilke:
GEN: Was one of the first school teachers sent to Ireland from England when that country first came under English rule. The small
GEN: desk belonging to the Lawrance family went with her to Ireland and later to New Zealand and finally Australia. It is to be
GEN: passed to the oldest son in each Lawrance generation.
GEN: It appears Wilmott travelled on board the Adelaide to Wellington New Zealand arriving in 1840. She was however listed on the
GEN: passenger manifest as Ann Tilke. Joseph Lawrance (spelled Laurance on the list) was also listed.
GEN: Ann is listed as the first school teacher in Wellington. The initial source for the information on Ann's early school is, in
GEN: the main, from Ward's "Early Wellington" but this has been confirmed from other sources as well. The story about early
GEN: education in New Zealand http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~ourstuff/EducationandSchools.htm mentions that she taught
GEN: very early on "...shortly she after she arrived...". It is not known if she taught at the school opened by Charles Grace a few
GEN: weeks after the Adelaide arrived.
GEN:
GEN: The name Ann comes from the original New Zealand Company list and is confirmed by the transcription of the Adelaide list from
GEN: the same source in "Early Wellington". This also points out that during the voyage she was under the care of Mrs Evans, the
GEN: wife of Dr G S Evans.
GEN: Also in "Early Wellington" is an entry for the 1841 marriage of a Lawrence (spelt Laurance on the passenger list in the same
GEN: publication) to a Miss Tilke "first schoolmistress at Weslyan Church, Te Aro." Also Joseph's age on the original documents is
GEN: given as 21.
GEN: Another source: Miss TILKE, who arrived via the 'Adelaide' under care of Dr EVANS has the honour of being the first to conduct
GEN: a regular school in the Port Nicholson district. A little to the west of the corner of Pipitea & Mulgrave Sts
GEN: Thus, Ann Tilke is actually Wilmott Huxtable Tilke who married Joseph Lawrance. Perhaps she was more comfortable with the
GEN: simpler name.
GEN: Later in her life she conducted a Ladies School as Glen Osmond and attended Zion Christian Church in Pulteney Street, Adelaide,
GEN: South Australia where a Mr. Playford was the pastor (an ancestor of Sir Thomas Playford who was premier of S.A. for many
GEN: years).
GEN: Ancestral Notes:
GEN: The Lawrance family knowledge of Wilmott ends here however the IGI and Norman Fosh
GEN: (http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/f/o/s/Norman-S-Fosh/index.html) provide information on the christening of a
GEN: Wilmett Tilke to parents John Tilke and Wilmett (Wilmot) Huxtable on 22 Jan 1809.
GEN: With the Lawrance connected Wilmott Huxtable Tilke having both parental surnames and a birthdate matching, it has been assumed
GEN: this is the correct lineage and the remainder of her family has been added.
