Kootenai Brown's Cabin

Kootenai Brown was born in Ennistymon, Ireland in 1839. He came to Canada via the Panama Railroad after serving with the British Military in India. After working in B.C. at the Caribou gold rush and later at Fort Steele as a constable, Kootenai came through South Kootenay Pass to Waterton.

After continuing on his travels, Kootenai met his first wife, Olivia, a Metis woman, in the Dakota region of the United States. Kootenai and Olivia returned to Waterton where they had three children. After Olivia died, Kootenai took his children to father Lacombe to be cared for by the church.

Later Kootenai married again, this time to a Cree woman named Isabella. They lived in this cabin until 1911, when due to his efforts, Waterton Park was established and Kootenai was appointed its first superintendent.

Kootenai died in 1916, and is buried on the shores of Waterton Lake with both his wives.
