NWMP Outpost 1887

This log structure was used as an Outpost by the North West Mounted Police from the 1880's until the eve of the First World War. It originally went under the Kootenai name & later was known as the Big Bend Outpost. Located near the Waterton River, outposts such as this assisted the Mounties in patrolling rural areas of the frontier.

Outside this cabin, a monument has been erected for Sgt. Wilde who was shot by Charcoal, a Blood Indian.

You will find historical NWMP uniforms and histories of some officers who were stationed at the early Pincher Creek barracks.
