There are only a few resources that deal specifically with the topic of "teacher wellness".  This page offers a variety of wellness links as sources of  information for you to build on your personal concept of teacher wellness.  It is up to you to discern the value and usefulness of these linked sites as you strive to develop an inclusive, holistic, and personalized definition.  

The links were chosen because:

Few resources but a very good place to start

New link - Find out about some recent teacher wellness support by a teachers wellness committee at Niskayuna High School in New York state

Sites to support better teaching and administration

These links were chosen for their readily available information, ease of navigation, and because they appeared to be regularly updated.  Important aspects for teachers who wish to be well as they meet the challenges of day-to-day schooling.

New! Teaching Heart A site designed for K-3 teachers with ideas, links, lessons, units, activity sheets, and many items to inspire teachers.  Also a chance to join chats, mailrings, and receive a newsletter. 

Educators are becoming more aware of brain-based learning concepts.  Here are two websites, one from Martha Kaufeldt, the other  from Kathie Nunley.

Need some background research (either an abstract or a full length document) Ask ERIC (Educational Resources Information Center).  Many other resources include a good lesson plans link in this site.

American Association of School Administrators Click the publications link to view The Web version of The School Administrator.

k-6 Elementary Educators.com - this is a large site with many subtopics to assist teachers.  Take a peek at the classroom management ideas and resources.

Surrey B.C. School District Leadership Academy an excellent resource for aspiring or inservicing school administrators.

safehealthyschools.org - a site in its infancy yet packed with a great deal of information on the wide range of topics that schools need to deal with to ensure the safety and health of the school community.

Alberta Learning Website - Connection Information for Teachers On-Line

Canada's School Net Resources - a huge number, so go into this page with a specific topic in mind.

University of Alberta Library, K-12 Lessons Plans Links

CanadianTeachers.net - a website for teachers to connect electronically with colleagues including resources, chatboards, mailings, and job postings.

Alberta Teachers' Association - especially the pages with links to all of the provincial and territorial teachers' organizations, publications, and ATA Specialist Councils.

The Canadian Teachers' Federation/Federation canadienne des enseignantes et des enseignants.

A curriculum guide (1993) from Saskatchewan Education for a secondary level course called Wellness 10.

General Wellness Sites

Ergonomics - You may be deep into report cards, hunched over a desktop, writing or typing or you may be affected by other aspects of repetitive functions within your day to day routine that you should change for your wellness.  Here are a couple of sites to get you started from the Cornell University and the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety

A very thorough website on mental health

These sites are very good starting points for your Internet resources because they afford the user a wide and varied source of information and resources.  Each site will have information to offer about two or more Dimensions of Wellness.

Consumer Reports has a page within its site to help with research and advice on a wide array of health&beauty, personal care, food and beverage, and fitness  products.

University of California at Berkeley Wellness Letter - this .com site is based on an excellent monthly publication that uses a research base to help readers understand wellness topics.  While U.S. based, the Wellness Letter often refers to Canadian and international contexts.

A must to bookmark - Seek Wellness.com A terrific site for info and resources from the wellness guru Dr. Donald Ardell.

WellnessPlanet.com - a very good wellness site for beginning your search on a very wide spectrum of wellness topic.

General information on wellness WELL: Newsletter for Wellness

PubMed and Medline - click on MEDLINE/PubMed for a huge searchable database of research, clinical trials, and much more to inform on health issues.

Dr. Koop.com - a general health info site from the former U.S. surgeon general.

Health Scout.com A multi faceted site for resources and links

General Wellness Info at Wellness Junction.com

Netwellness.org - general info and advise and a very good search engine that lists articles and websites.

Health Care Information Resources - an extensive site from the McMaster University Health Sciences Library including wellness, alternative medicine, illness, and health sites.

WebMD.com - a good general info site.

This .com site offers resources for a wellness program for secondary students and adults featuring the Wellness Wheel teaching kit.

A vast bibliography of books, audio-visual and other resources categorized by wellness dimensions.

RxList.com - to help in a search for drugs, medicines, and medical terms.

Organizational Wellness - The Wellness Councils of America

The Family Centre.com - This company provides an Employee Assistance Program in Wetaskiwin Regional Public Schools, the employer of this website's author.

University of Guelph's Centre for Work and Well-being website at www.worklifecanada.ca   An excellent site for information on initiatives and research into worklife and well-being for Canadians.

Northern Arizona University Office of Employee Assistance and Wellness Model.

healthyworkplaceweek.ca promoting the third week of October as a time for employees and employers to strive to create wellness in the workplace.

Children's Health and Wellness

A couple of sources to help teachers in their role as caregivers.

A fascinating site called kidshealth, that has information and interactivity for kids, teens, and parents.   Not just great info for teachers and parents, its also a terrific place for teachers to take their kids for some learning fun.

Growing Healthy Kids is a Health Canada/Ontario - Early Years website.  Check out the "Transition to School" and "Transition to Adolescence" pages, as well as the many projects and initiatives listed under the "Strategies" portion of the site.

DR. PAUL's Child Health and Wellness Info Site

Medicating Kids - the website that accompanied the Public Broadcasting System's Frontline program about children, parents and physicians trying to deal with medication choices and ADHD.

Mentoring

Mentoring has many facets all of which can be extremely beneficial to education and teacher wellness.  

The Mentoring Resource Leadership Network is a good place to look for resources on induction and mentoring of beginning teachers.

An article in the International Electronic Journal for Leadership in Learning discusses Peer Mentoring Programs for Principals.

The Peer Resources Document Archive is a site that offers many resources for mentoring including peer coaching.  

Teachers looking for resources on mentoring of students should try this link to the Mentor Center.

The Dietitians of Canada have a good site for those in search of practical and reliable info on nutrition.

Senior's Wellness.com

Canadian Cancer Society Alberta/NWT - a great organization.  Check the prevention ideas.

Heart and Stroke Foundation - lots of great info on a wellness issue near and dear to our hearts.

Natural and Alternative Health and Wellness Sites

A growing area of health care for both prevention and cure.

Dr. Joseph Mercola's Optimal Wellness Center is a website developed and maintained by a doctor of osteopathic medicine.  Providing info and weekly newsletters, this site is a critical and opinionated look at current health and wellness issues.  Certainly worth a look!

Wellness Options - Magazine that promotes and integrates health perspectives and options from Western medicine, Complementary/Natural and Oriental/Traditional medicine.

Wellness solutions.com - A site run by a physician in Texas that offers a mix of traditional and alternative medicine.  Worth a look if you have moments of skepticism regarding traditional medical methods.

Naturopathic medicine - this British Columbia, Canada site will give you access to information on questions you may have about this type of alternative medicine.

Healthwell.com - with a focus on "natural" products.
