| About Liz Saunders
With a background in biology and geography, and a passion for painting and drawing, Liz has successfully combined both science and art into her business. Educational qualifications include a BSc from The University of Birmingham, England and an MSc from the University of Calgary, Alberta. The relationships between riparian vegetation and birds along the Red Deer River was the topic of Liz's Master's research, and she has continued to study these relationships through a variety of contracts. Liz has been involved in many bird research projects, ranging from simple inventories to more complex single-species population studies. In her illustration work, Liz strives to create images that help the viewer to understand ecological relationships and concepts, are scientifically accurate and are also attractive to look at. Her illustrations are most often done in watercolour and pen and ink, but sometimes in pencil and occasionally gouache. Prior to commiting full-time to her business, Liz worked as the Natural Resource Manager for the City of Lethbridge, leading a variety of resource management initiatives such as ecological inventories, invasive species control, reclamation of disturbed areas and wildlife management. She also spent several years running Lethbridge's nature centre (the Helen Schuler Coulee Centre). Her experience in interpretation helps her greatly in her illustration work. Aside from work, Liz's passions include her quarter section of native grasslands and cottonwood forest, flat-coated retrievers, and poking about the prairies and mountains of southern Alberta. |
