We have a rule here..... "once puppies start ripping drywall off of our walls, it is time for them to spend more time outside"....we hit that point at the beginning of this week and fortunately the weather has been quite good.

The puppies experienced two moves in the last couple of days. Firstly, they moved from our dining room in to a bigger pen in our kitchen eating area. They had outgrown the dining room and in the kitchen they have quick access to outdoors, which helps with housetraining. Then, we set up one of our kennel runs for the puppies. They are now spending several hours a day out in the runs and they just love having so much space to run around in and play. The also seem to enjoy being in the company of our older dogs. They like to paw at Lupine through the chain link and Lupine is so very tolerant of puppy antics. We go out to check on them regularly and let them out for bathroom breaks and playtime in the grass.

Chicken backs have become a big part of the puppy menu. At first they would mostly chew and play with them, but not get much meat off of them. Now they are able to eat most of the back, leaving just the hardest part in the middle. When we put out a bowl of backs, they each take one and carry it off to eat it somewhere comfortable. They are also getting their mushy meals four times a day.

We took 130 photos of the puppies yesterday - when we get them sorted out, we will post more soon!

Exploring the new digs - complete with a sun deck, indoor house and toys!
One of the most exciting things to happen recently was that Tally got to go back to her puppies. Her mastitis has cleared up and she is doing well. She has mostly dried up, as expected, but she still lets the puppies nurse and they all seem to enjoy going through the motions.

On their 6 week birthday, they got dewormed - woo hoo!  They seemed to find the deworming medicine quite tasty.

They also met our cat, Maggie. She wandered into the kitchen while the puppies were loose. The puppies sniffed her and were cautious and appropriately respectful. The funny thing is that Maggie is a small black, long-haired cat, so she looks pretty much the same as they do right now!

Those of you that have been to visit us recently will know that there is a pair of bluebirds nesting in a box very close to the puppy run. They always seem to be watching over the puppies while they are out playing. We also have a meadowlark that sings loudly from a nearby fencepost and vesper sparrows that flit in and out of the puppy run and sing throughout the day. Given all of this, we have decided that the theme for the puppies' registered names will be prairie songbirds.
Here are some photos from a visit last weekend. The puppies loved playing with the children. And our adult dogs thought that boys that threw frisbees for them was the best thing that happened all week!
PUPPY COFFEE BREAK (well, the puppies don't get coffee, they get goatsmilk and pumpkin cookies), May 12, 2006
They have graduated to the 12" wide, 8' tunnel and they all love to run through it.
