This June, Canada will hold the G8 and G20 summits in Toronto and
Huntsville, Ont. The total cost to us as host nation is expected to top
a billion dollars. Top of the agenda at both summits will doubtless be
the urgent need for all governments to bring in austerity measures to
wrestle down towering debt and deficits. Smell a contradiction here?
Not to worry! As Ralph Waldo Emerson said: “A foolish consistency is
the hobgoblin of little minds, adored by little statesmen.” No little
statesmen are likely to attend our G8 and G20 Summits.
(We need more foolish consistency, less consistently foolish.)
