On the Eve of Destruction
A recording artist looking to improve his prospects ought to consider
bringing out a new rendition of the 1965 protest song Eve of
Barry McGuire’s original version was great, but the world is ready to
hear a new release. Certainly, a music video of such by a Canadian
performer could credibly, to the CRTC’s delight, include only footage
of very our own national tragedies: Slave Lake ravaged by forest fire,
massive flooding across Manitoba and Quebec, Vancouver’s downtown
trashed by hockey rioters, and so on.
Folk songs are the comfort food of the music industry; even when, oddly
enough, their message is anything but reassuring. We need comforting
about now. So, bring ‘em on!
