FreeBMD stands for Free Births, Marriages, and Deaths. The FreeBMD Project's objective is to provide
free Internet access to the Civil Registration index information for England and Wales
National Burial Index for England and Wales
The first edition of the NBI includes well over 5.4 million records from more
than 4,400 parish, non-conformist and cemetery burial registers. These entries
come from different types of sources, for example, parish registers, bishops'
transcripts, earlier transcripts or printed registers. The NBI for England and
Wales does not contain monumental inscription records.
The aim of the National Burial Index (NBI) for England and Wales is to assist
family historians find burial records and in so doing will complement the
International Genealogical Index (IGI) which, of course, is mainly a finding aid
to baptisms and marriages. The two CD's can be ordered and the viewer
can be downloaded from this site.
