John Rogers Davis and
Alice Maria Perry Davis

Taken from "Our Treasured Heritage-
A History of Coalhurst and District
Pages 299 - 300

John Rogers Davis and his brother, Samuel Hopkins Davis,
moved to Lethbridge in about 1884 and homesteaded on
24-9-22 W4 which is east of Coalhurst. After freighting with
bull teams between Fort Benton, Montana and Fort MacLeod
for a number of years, John turned his attention to developing
the ranch. John married a local girl, Alice Maria Perry.

Children born of this union were: one daughter and two
sons. One son Samuel Scott was born August 1, 1897,
near Lethbridge. He passed away in 1975.

In 1897 misfortune struck, John lost his eyesight. His
wife Alice stepped in and became his eyes, and they
carried on the ranch. In 1907 he was stricken by a
heart attack and died suddenly. By this time Alice had
proven her ability. She added another half section of
land in West Lethbridge, and built a store in Coalhurst
when the Coalhurst mine went into production. She
remarried in 1917, and moved to Pennsylvania leaving
he operation of the ranch in the capable hands of her son.
She returned to Lethbridge with her husband Thomas
Stockdale in 1927, and resided there until her death in 1956.
