Bert (Bernie) Gillette and
Elsie Hammarberg Gillette

Taken from "Our Treasured Heritage-
A History of Coalhurst and District
Pages 342 - 343

by B. L. Gillette

Our father's name was Bert Bernie Gillette. He was born
on March 9, 1885, in Beatrice, Gage County, Nebraska.
The family moved to Cheny, Washington.

Bert travelled to Mexico in his late teens, and worked in
the smelters at Butte, Montana, for a couple of winters.
He then went to Alberta, where he homesteaded in 1905,
at 20 years of age. His homestead was NE4-10-22.

He was married some time later, and lost his first wife
and child during child birth.

He married our mother, Elsie Hammarberg, on October 11,
1916. Their first child, Dorothy Bernice, was born in Diamond
City November 14, 1917. Their second child was born on their
homestead. In 1920 they moved to Red Deer, Alberta for
one winter, and in 1921 settled on the farm 8 miles west of
Penhold where all eight of us grew up, and attended Pine
Hill Public school.

We all enjoy visiting the farm, some of us have a little garden
spot there as well. That's where we grew up.

Dorothy Bernice, born Nov 14, 1917, Diamond City -Died
June 15, 1981. Married and had two children.

Wayne Harvey, born October 17, 1927, Innisfail - Died
