The High Bank School

Once Hundred Sixty Acres and a Dream
The People Who Pioneered It
by Mrs. Lillian (Anderson) Ost
Book 11

The different level of land from the flats about Seven Persons must have prompted the homesteaders of this district to name it High Bank. (The two roads which went up the Mitchell Hill or up the Charlie Willis Hill, were very steep.)

High Bank School was used no more as a classroom. In 1962 the building was sold to Mr. Bert Stiff and he moved it to his farm. In more recent years Oliver Ost has acquired this relic, has transported it to his home site and uses it as a shop.

The names of some of the teachers who taught at this High Bank School are: Miss Kennedy, Miss Jeannie Stauders, Mr. Leader, Miss Bowden, Miss McDonald, Mr. McManus, Mrs. Irene Van, Miss Walla Jahraus (Mrs. Arnold McCormick), Miss Helen McMullen (Mrs. Virgil Elliot), Mrs. Jenkins, Mrs. Monks, Miss Ada McVeigh (Mrs. Tom Nesting), Miss Carrie Luyten (Miss Otto Romeike), Miss Lena Fraser, Miss Lillian Anderson (Mrs. Olander Ost), Miss Minnie Harris, Miss Florence Hackney, Miss Lillian Weiss (Mrs. Harvey Hazard), Miss Winnifred Burbidge (Mrs. Naylor), Miss Kelly Burbidge, Miss Annie Statema and Miss June Sharp (who was a supervisor of correspondence courses).
