Nicholas (Nick) Slemko and
Jessie Tymchuk

Taken from "Our Treasured Heritage-
A History of Coalhurst and District
Page 513

Nick immigrated to Canada from the Ukraine in 1911, and
worked in Southern Alberta on C.P.R. section crews. In
1911, he settled in Coalhurst to work in the mine, hoping
to earn enough money to achieve his life-long ambition of
owning his own farm. In 1913, in Lethbridge, he married
Jessie Tymchuk. The couple subsequently settled in
Wigan and raised a family of five children.

After the explosion and shut-down of the Coalhurst mine,
Nick moved to Drumheller to work in a mine, and in 1940
was killed in a mine accident.

His widow, Jessie, now ninety-one years old, lives in an
Edmonton nursing home. The two eldest children, Helen and
Sam, are deceased. Besides her children; Jessie has eight
grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and one great-great
-grandchild.

Nick passed away January, 1984.
