John J. Sullivan and
Barbara Harkley Sullivan

Tales and Trails - A History of Longview
and Surrounding Area

If you follow the Coal Trail to Longview, then up the Highwood, you will come to Sullivan Creek. Across the bridge there are three little graves marked with a single slab which indicate where three Sullivan children were buried in May of 1894: Peter, May 6th, Patrick the 8th and Margaret the 16th, ranging in age from 14 months to six years of age. John J. Sullivan came from Montana, settled a short distance north of High River. He met Barbara Harkley of Calgary and within a week they were married. During 1888 they moved to the creek that still carries his name, now owned by Joe Bews.

They had eight children.

Mr. Sullivan was dragged to death by a horse.

Later Mrs. Sullivan married I. J. Hicks; she passed away at the age of 76 years.
