Wm. Van Buuren Sr. was born in Holland in 1898. He immigrated in 1923 to farm in the Saskatoon area. Three years later he went back to his native Holland and married Annie VanderKamp. She was born in Holland in 1896. They returned to the Saskatoon area for almost a year. They came to Coaldale in 1927 for a short time. After which they moved to the Coalhurst district. They farmed the J. I. McDermott farm for a number of years then moved to the Art Morgan homestead which was two miles south of Coalhurst. We were the second owners of this farm.
This was to be our home for years to come. We grew grain. potatoes and of course a large garden. We also had milk cows, mother used to make homemade butter to sell to the stores in Coalhurst. In later years we sold milk and cream to the Thom Dairy - then later cream to the Cyrstal Dairy, Lethbridge.
In about 1940, dad started working at the No. 8 Coal Mine where he worked for about fifteen years.
There were six children born to the Van Buuren family. A son Harry dead at age seven. Memories of our home life were-, riding in a horse and buggy to church in Coalhurst. Regular visits with our friends the Martin Van Leukens in Lethbridge. Stuart Falconer, our ditch rider stopped at the house for coffee and getting rides in his buggy. Our first Model A. car, then graduating to a 1935 Ford. Sunday visits to our Aunt and Uncle's the Abens. Walking to school in our earlier years, then getting to ride on Mr. Firths Lethbridge school bus.
William Van Buuren Sr. passed away March 9, 1957. Mother stayed on the farm for a few years, then moved into Lethbridge. She passed away March 6th, 1971.
