I have here a late production No5 Mk1, manufactured by ROF Fazakerley in 1947.  To be more precise its one of the last the serial number is AC14XX and it was made in October of '47.  There were no No5's made in '48 and the serial numbers never reached ADXXXX so there are not many made after this one.

All the parts are correct, bolt, receiver barrel and, forestock all have the serial number stamped on them.  The magazine that came with the rifle is of Longbranch manufacture, but that is not a problem, as magazines were not always numbered, and often exchanged.  The rear site is correct, milled, micrometer adjustable to 800yds, marked F.  The bore is sharp and shiny, head spacing is tight and the bolt has a number 0 bolt head.

Just to update this page, shortly after I purchased this rifle I was offered another No5 almost identical to this one, the difference being the serial number AC02XX manufactured in September of '47. So I bought it as well, but it is not in my collection and now belongs to my brother, after all everyone needs an Enfield.

Both of these rifles shoot just fine, and display none of the fabled wandering zero problems.

Late style wood with metal nose cap

Also showing the flash hider or blast cone, and bayonet lug.  the No5 did not use the same bayonet as the No4 or No1 rifle.

barley perceivable is the sight protector ears as they are curved outwards from the site.

This shows the lightening cuts on the barrel knox.  There were 4, 2 per side.  Also there was material removed from the rear of the receiver.  The space under the sight is evident when compared to a No4.  Not shown is the boss on the right side of the receiver, the No5 had the boss removed completely.

The cuts in the stock of the No5 are also slightly different than the No4 rifle.  There is one long cut and one short cut while on the No4 rifles there is normally 3 short cuts.

No 4 Receiver
On the left is the No5 bolt and on the right is a No4 bolt.  The No5 bolt had a hole bored into the handle to reduce weight.  No 4 bolt handles come in 3 varieties, full spherical, with a flat, (as in the picture) and, some late manufacture No4 bolts had the hole like the No5 rifle.  There were 2 different sizes of holes.
The No5 rifle was equipped with a rubber recoil pad.  While it is a great ideal to absorb some of the recoil as the No5 is significantly lighter than the No4, the design and application of this pad does little to diminish the recoil.  Also the rear sling attachment point was incorporated into the recoil pad.
