PPL History
As a result of the Alberta Government's decision to deregulate the electricity industry, a group of seven like-minded Rural Electrification Associations (REAs) had the foresight to realize their world was about to change.  This group chose to tackle these challenges directly and in 2000 Prairie Power Ltd. (PPL) was incorporated.  PPL's primary reason for existing was to remove the risks and uncertainties of deregulation for the sole and exclusive benefit of all the shareholders and their members.  PPL accomplished this by: This allowed the shareholder REAs to concentrate on what they do best - continue to provide a level of customer service unmatched anywhere else in the province.

PPL Today
Since PPL's incorporation, both the shareholder group and the power market have undergone significant change, a common occurrence in the course of any new business or market as it grows and matures.  Currently PPL is compromised of 3 shareholder REAs with a membership exceeding 10,500.  The 3 current shareholders are:

Central Alberta REA
Manning REA
North Parkland REA

PPL is a lean, "at-cost" entity with minimal operating expenses that returns all net revenues and benefits to its shareholders and members.  We continue to seek out pricing options from the various suppliers in the marketplace in order to effectively manage volatility risk on behalf of all shareholders.  The bottom line is that PPL is a business whose primary focus is to make decisions that add value to the shareholders and members it serves.  Being part of PPL really means being exposed to all aspects of the electricity market and, more importantly, having a real voice in how to meet all of the challenges that invariably occur.

Recently, PPL hired Jason Beblow as the power procurement agent.
