Our years

Members of the Blackfoot nation practiced a nomadic lifestyle in Southwestern Alberta for several thousand years. You can learn about their culture at the Glenbow museum in Calgary, an excellent museum at a buffalo jump just outside of Fort Mcleod, or from today's members of the Blackfoot nation. The natives used to keep track of the flow of time with the help of year symbols: Each year would be symbolized by a little drawing that represented the most important event during that year for a particular tribe. The natives painted the year symbols on a spiral on deer hide. They could take this quite movable calendar with them as they followed the buffalo herds.

A calendar like this could therefore be created over the course of decades. A single piece of art growing older and richer over the years ... what a great practice. We try to adapt this practice to the internet age and start with the end of 2002 our own annual internet calendar to keep track of what was moving us over the year.
