Area Overview
The Town of Lacombe's history dates back to the time when the railroad came to central Alberta, when settlers rushed into the area to set up homesteads. It was incorporated as a village in 1896, and as a town in 1902. Lacombe has always been a "small" town where one can still enjoy close community spirit and neighbourly friendships.

It offers a unique lifestyle conducive to all sectors of the population with its local college, federal and provincial research centres, its petro-chemical association and its strong ethnic, cultural and agricultural base. Lacombe is also part of the successful "Alberta Main Street" program, designed to reaffirm Lacombe's close link with its glorious history.

Lacombe is fortunate to be located adjacent to Red Deer, a centre large enough to offer city shopping, city services, city experiences, but small enough to retain the quality of life often missing in large cities.

Location
The Town of Lacombe is located in Lacombe County. It is 25 km north of Red Deer, 118 km south of Edmonton, and 161 km north of Calgary.

Economic Base
Lacombe is the centre of one of Alberta's most fertile production areas. The #1 soil both east and west of Lacombe has a history of successful farming dating back to the turn of the century. Wheat, barley, and oats are some of the products grown in the area.

Now, more value-added industries have moved into Lacombe, e.g. dairy operations, hog and beef operations, greenhouses, and a wide range of agricultural support services.
