LEAVING THE NEST
Chapter 18 of 23
[McGowan Clan]

Over the next several years the children were raised on the farm. Eventually Margaret(#128), Florence(#129) and Lillian(#131) all moved to St. Stephen where they lived together and worked at the cotton mill.

After obtaining work visas for the U.S.A. in September of 1926, Margaret and Florence moved to Wellsley Mass. where they met their older brother Raymond(#126) who had already moved here some years before. Lillian lived in Calais for a while but she would also move to Wellsley some years later. Eventually, their younger sister Marion(#134) would also move to Mass.

Through discussion with cousin Marguerite(#138), I have learned that the four sisters did keep in reasonably close touch during their lifetimes. All lived in Mass. for most of their adult lives. Margaret(#128) never married and is now living in Falmouth Mass. She has always assumed a great sense of responsibility in family affairs and frequently visited Rollingdam over the years with her sisters and their families.

Florence and her husband Delmont(#139) owned a house in Wellesley Mass . and a cottage in Falmouth, Cape Cod, for many years. In later years they returned from Florida to again live in Falmouth. Daughter Marguerite (#138) and much of her family still live in or near this community.

Marion(#134) was married but had no children. Lillian(#131) was also married and lived in Cambridge Mass. Her grandson Bobby(#202) still lives in the Boston area.

Eldest son Raymond(#126) lived in Wellesley for some years before moving to New York. In 1929, my father Robert(#130) went to the U.S.A. for a short time to work with his brother painting buildings. In due time, home-sickness influenced his return to the Rollingdam area. I understand uncle Raymond developed a successful painting business that would eventually be taken over be his eldest son Raymond(Jr.). He also had a large family of six(6) children. Most still live in or near the Newburg N.Y. area.

During the 1920's, until my father (Robert#130) was married, he made trips to Saskatchewan and different locations in the U.S.A. in order to work.

John(#132) lived on the farm most of the time with his father Robert(#13) and Dora(#136).

Meanwhile (shortly after Margaret and Florence had left home) in 1924, at the home of his cousin John Hickey in Worcester Mass., Robert(#13) took a second wife Dora O'Brien(#136). By most accounts, this was not a popular decision from the younger generation's point of view. The best information I have suggests that Dora was a lady of stern countenance who would frequently offer criticism, constructive or otherwise.
