In July of 1926, Rollingdam was a thriving community. Still it had it's problems as attested to by the following article from the St. Croix Courier.
John Murphy, the popular dance proprietor at Rollingdam, held a largely attended chicken supper in his hall last Thursday evening. This was followed by a dance, the last of the party leaving at about 1 o'clock. Shortly afterwards a party driving towards town looked back and were amazed to see the big hall all in flames. Mr. and Mrs. Murphy and other neighbours were summoned but with no appliances, could not fight the flames. The building was completely destroyed together with the piano, other instruments, the stoves and dishes and there was but partial insurance. Whether the fire was deliberately set or caught from a cigar or cigarette stub will probably never be known.
Murphy's dance hall was a well known entertainment centre that lasted well
into the 1960's until Johnny Murphy passed away. As I grew up in Rollingdam,
it was common to lay in bed and hear the square dance music emanating from
Murphy's every thursday evening. Patrons came from miles around to dance,
eat, drink and fight. It was a well known fact that anyone from Rollingdam older
than 15 years of age was a dancer, male or female. Old John Murphy sat at the
entrance and collected admission while many of the local ladies tended the
canteen where soft drinks, hot dogs, cigarettes and candies could be bought.
If you could not afford admission or you were not ready to go in, one could stand
in the "bull pen" located to the left of the entrance and watch the fun. At
intermission, when everyone went outside for fresh air, the fights were on.
When John Murphy died in the 1960's, the dance hall and land were left to
relatives in the eastern U.S.A. The establishment was closed for good and
never reopened. The hall eventually fell apart and in later years, the grounds
were used for a time as a location to play some local baseball. Today the lot is
fast growing into bush.
