Dorothy Jean (Boyd) -Passed away peacefully on January 18, 2008 in her
Placerville home, comforted by family and friends. Dorothy is survived by her
loving husband of 57 years, Walter Milligan; children, Bruce, Teri, and Dennis
Milligan; four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. She was born October
3rd 1928 in Ukiah. It was there where she met and married Walter in 1951. She
and her family settled in Rohnert Park in 1960 where she was an active member
of society and became one of the first members of the Rohnert Park Woman's
Club. Years later she relocated in the hills of Placerville where she spent the
remaining years of her life. Dorothy was known for her quick wit and humor but
mostly her loving and kind heart. She was a friend to all that knew her and
never turned down a friend in need. She will be deeply missed and will always
hold a special place in our hearts. Friends are welcome to celebrate Dorothy's
life with her family at their home in Placerville on Saturday, February 2nd. We
give thanks to Snow Line Hospice. Donations may be made to the American Cancer
Society.

Elizabeth Genevieve (MILLIGAN-Quintrall/Buckingham).
Passed away on January 10, 2003 in Loving, NM after a short illness. Liz or
Beth, as she will be remembered by family and friends, was born in Merced, CA
December 8, 1931. Raised
in Forestville. At the age of 16, she met and married the late James (Lee)
Robert QUINTRALL/BUCKINGHAM. In the 60's they enjoyed square dancing, where Lee
was one of the top callers of Northern California. Beth moved on to the Reno
area where she met and married Pieter ALKEMA. They traveled to Florida and
Virginia before settling in Loving, MN, where she managed a motel until her
passing at age 71. Elizabeth is survived by her husband of 30 years; Pieter
ALKEMA., Sister Josephine HUTCHINSON, Sebastopol, CA. Brothers John BOBELL,
Cotati, CA, William BOBELL, Georgia, and Walter MILLIGAN, Placerville, CA.

communication from Kerry Buckingham, Apr 2006: "My father, James Robert
Buckingham, assumed the name of his stepfather "Quintrall"
to enter the Navy at the age of 17. During the course of being in the Navy, he
met and married my mother, Elizabeth G. Milligan. All the children between then
except for me were born under the name "Quintrall".
The Navy found out about the deception and kicked him out, and the state made
him re-assume his birth name. I was the only one born under the name
"Buckingham". I hope that clears some of that up. I still get a
little confused over it all."

for Walter Hoyt Milligan: Walter
Hoyt said when he was 5 years old he was told his mother and father were both
dead and buried before he was 5. He said he lived with his uncle and his bed
was in the barn. He took care of the animals. Food was brought out to him
except for Thanksgiving and Christmas, when he came in the house and ate at a
table set aside. One of the girls in the family brought him goodies from food
in the house and clothing as well. He went to school and finished the 5th
reader. At 12 years old, a circus came to town and he went and helped set up
the tents and tear them down. They
liked his work and invited him to come along, so he went home and packed and on
the way out the door grabbed a picture of his mother, and went with the circus
till he was 16 or 17. The circus ultimately went to Montana, and along the way
he met Buffalo Bill Cody and Harry Houdini. He
went from there to Salt Lake City, where he signed up for the draft. He was
working as a hod carrier, and work got slow, so he
went to Boise, Idaho, where he met and married Evelyn Hooper. Walter
changed occupations to a roustabout in the logging camps. It got slow there, so
they moved to Coos Bay, Oregon, where the children were born. He wound up
leaving Evelyn and moved to Stockton, California. He worked for Holtz Manufacturing,
where they made heavy machinery. About 1923, he met and married Norma Brandt.
In 1933 they moved to Sebastopol, Sonoma County, California. The
above notes were based on stories told by Walter Hoyt Milligan to his son,
Walter. Recent
research has brought forward confirmation of most of the story above as well as
added some new twists to his life history.
From this I have created a chronological outline of events in his life
together with some opinions as to what may or may not happened: 5 May 1879 Born in Baillie, Charlotte County, New
Brunswick to Robert and Jane Grace (Hoyt) Milligan. This was the home of his Milligan
grandparents and many other relatives. CLICK HERE TO

maternal Grandmother, Jane (Irwin) Hoyt died. CLICK HERE TO VIEW DOCUMENT 1881 This
census for York County, New Brunswick has him living with his parents, Robert
and Jane at the home of her father, Daniel Hoyt at Lake George, Prince William,
York. They may have moved there with
Jane’s father when her mother died as Daniel would have been 65 years old at
the time. CLICK HERE TO VIEW DOCUMENT 30 Dec 1882 Walter’s father, Robert, died.
His death was previously listed as 1883 but this is believed to be in
error as confirmation of this date has not been found and it also conflicts
that when Jane died in 1883 that she was listed as the relict (widow) of Robert
Milligan. 14
Jan 1883 Walter was baptized at Scotch
Ridge Church near the settlement of Baillie where a lot of his father’s family
lived. He was listed as the son of Mrs.

HERE TO VIEW DOCUMENT 28 Feb 1883 His mother Jane (Hoyt) Milligan died. Thus Walter became an orphan before he
reached the age of 4. It appears for
reasons unknown that it was decided to leave Walter in the care of his Uncle
James Milligan and his new wife Sarah Elizabeth (Day) Milligan. From the stories told by Walter Hoyt Milligan
to his son Walter, his childhood was not a desirable situation to say the

1891 NB Census has him still livingwith James and Elizabeth Milligan when he
was 12 years old. CLICK HERE TO VIEW DOCUMENT 22 Apr
1896 Sarah Elizabeth (Day)Milligan died. If Walter, then aged 17,was still there, it
is almost safe to assume that he would run away. If he took a picture of his
“mother”, When he left, it was likely that
ofElizabeth as she would be the only mother that he would remember. CLICK HERE TO VIEW DOCUMENT Nothing is known of his life from age 12 until the record
of his marriage in NB in 1905except his story about running away and joining
the circus which is probablytrue. An entry In the 1901
NB Census hasa Walter Milligan, aged 22, working in a factory and living as a
boarder with a Charles Simmons family in Dumfries, NB. The age is OK but the
birthdates of this Walter Milligan are not the same as our Walter. Dumfries is close to the area where the Hoyt family
