The Museum Wants You To Think Big. Really Big!
The Museum Wants You To Think Big. Really Big!
By Mari Sasano
You might have driven by the North Edmonton Sculpture Workshop many times–it’s on 116th Street and 105th Avenue, near the curling supplies store. It’s a nondescript warehousey kind of building, but if you look carefully, there are a few big metal things hanging around. Look even more carefully, and you’ll see that they’re mammoth sculptures, the sort you will see at their Big Things show held annually at the Royal Alberta Museum. The thing about big metal sculptures is that you can get right close to them, touch them, even sit on them (if you can find a comfortable surface). They become part of the landscape; they don’t need to be protected from the weather, thieves (the sculptures aren’t easily transported!), or touchy-feely passersby. They’re just huge, solid monument, impressive in size and elegant in shape, standing in the museum courtyard until it’s time for them to go to new homes if they have sold, or back to the workshop.
“Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!”
