The astute drum student will have noticed in example # 5
on the previous page, that the Left Hand is playing "off beat quarter
note triplets". If we leave out the Right Hand snare drum notes,
we have only the Left Hand quarter note triplets remaining on the snare
drum. (example # 1 below) We can also start the triplets on the second
beat of the bar, (making them "ON" beat triplets)(example # 2 below)

If we put the Right Hand snare drum notes on the Ride Cymbal,
we have a "shuffle" on the Ride Cymbal and Quarter note triplets on the
snare drum. (example # 3 below) We can also start the triplets on the
second beat of the bar, (making them "ON" beat triplets)....(example # 4
below)

Again, putting the Right Hand snare notes back on the snare,
(using example # 5 below), we can create yet another variation by moving a
couple of the left hand notes. (example # 6) We now end up with a "shuffle"
on the snare drum, and a "swing" on the ride cymbal.
This is sometimes referred to as a "double shuffle", or the
"Chicago shuffle".

NOTE!! ....WE NEVER
LOSE THE RIDE ON THE CYMBAL.
