16 months after sitting down to paint my first pair of Marauders, I finally took a Chaos army onto the field of battle today. Alas, the results were less than stellar, but I look upon this as more of a learning experience than a failure. The list I assembled wasn't a terribly effective one, and designed more with the intent of testing the capabilities of a variety of units. So, what went wrong? My first and most glaring error was being too aggressive. Chaos troops are strong, but get easily overwhelmed when significantly outnumbered. Against an opponent like the Skaven, I think it makes more sense to take a largely defensive posture and keep the line in one piece. I charged with rather reckless abandon (a habit no doubt developed from my experience with Greenskins), leaving gaping holes in my lines through which I managed to get myself hit in the flanks. Not a smart move, particularly when you've got frenzied rats toting flails wandering about. I also discovered that Chaos Hounds are best not used for frontal charges. With no armor and rather low leadership, you'd best be sure you're going to annihilate your opponent in a single turn. In the future, I think I'll stick to small units for making flank attacks. My Chaos Warriors should have performed signficantly better, and would likely have put up a much better fight had they not been hit in the flank by a rather sizeable block of Plague Monks. I must say, I'd certainly never expected my heavily armored, battle hardened Warriors to flee from the field after only a single round of combat. As suggested by the name, my Chaos Spawn was generally chaotic, unpredictable and in the end rather unreliable. To an extent, I think it was the victim of lucky rolling, but it really should have done a bit more damage. It's a thoroughly entertaining unit though, and therefore still well worth the 50 point investment in my opinion. What not only met but exceed my expectations was my squad of Chaos Knights. In fact, I think they're hideously overpowered, and will no doubt be significantly toned down when the army book is released. Accompanied by my Aspiring Champion, this small group of knights utterly slaughtered a regiment of Stormvermin, then went on to severely deplete units of Clanrats and Plague Monks before finally being destroyed. Impressive, but also virtually invincible. I was also reasonably happy with my Harpies, which ended up getting killed but still did a good job of harassing a pesky group of Jezzails that had set up shop inside a ruined cathedral. In the future, I think I'll likely field armies this small without Chaos Knights. While insanely effective, they seem perhaps a bit too expensive at the 1000 point level, and I'd probably be better off to go with an additional regiment of Chaos Warriors instead. |
