I fought several skirmish battles between August 29th and September 3rd, 2001. For the most part, I got defeated hideously, due at least partially to a misinterpretation of the psychology rules regarding fear. That accounts for my losses to a Vampire Counts band. My losses to a Skaven force can only be attributed to a combination of animosity and tactical blunders on my part. Don't charge a line of Clanrats holding a narrow gap - they're tougher than they look. We also had a thoroughly entertaining three-way "capture the flag" type match involving a rather volatile magic item. The key problems I encountered were animosity, which proved rather frustrating at times, and the extreme ineffectiveness of the chariot and archers in skirmish combat. While chariots may have their uses in full-scale battle, they get quickly surrounded and overrun in skirmishes. The Orc archers were virtually worthless. Without a Ballistic Skill of at least 4, simple bow attacks have such a low chance of causing any real damage that it's barely even worth trying. I was quite impressed with the performance of the Orc Boyz with dual hand weapons, who pack quite an effective punch at a minimal cost. Well, at least when they're not hitting each other over the head with rocks. The force I utilized is listed below. Note that this list was assembled using values and rules from the Ravening Hordes supplement, and that regular restrictions on minimum unit size did not apply as these were skirmish engagements. |
