This was another "test" battle, mainly intended as a educational experience regarding tactics and also an opportunity to examine the capabilities of some units I have yet to purchase miniatures for. Overall, it was a mixed bag of successes and failures. Once again, I had animosity problems, frequently resulting in the same unit being out of action for two or more consecutive turns. This was particularly frustrating with my Wolf Riders, as I was attempting to bring them up an undefended flank at the time. I didn't have much success with my Doom Diver either, which struck an enemy unit only once in the entire battle for a mere two casualties. I must admit I'm having some trouble understanding the popularity of stone throwers. I can see where they might have uses when you're firing at 3000+ points of closely packed troops, but in a 1000 point match you're fortunate to ever hit anything! Magic was a bust as well. Four power dice against six dispel dice doesn't do you much good, particularly when one Shaman spends most of his time fleeing. My luck wasn't entirely bad though. Via some sort of miracle, I managed to rally a fleeing unit of Night Goblins three times. Go figure. My fanatics were reasonably effective as well, randomly ending themselves up in a position to hit fleeing units of Dwarfs on several occasions. Now if only the Goblins had actually made it into combat. Bloody Flame Cannon! I'll have to be sure to take it out quickly in the future. |
