Finally, after six straight losses over the course of four months, a victory! And a resounding one at that; the final tally of victory points came out to 999 vs. 303. Ouch! I suppose I'd best try to catalogue what went into my success so I can repeat it in the future. First off, I targeted a key threat right from the beginning. I've had a lot of trouble with Flame Cannons in the past, so I immediately went after it with my Wolf Riders, who closed quickly and dispatched the cannon crew. No worries there any longer. Second, I remembered to utilize the benefits of my battle standard bearer this time around. Given I absorbed a fair amount of Thunderer fire, this saved me a few fleeing units of goblins. Even my Squig Herd made it through, despite taking heavy casualties. Third, Savage Orc Boar Boyz, which are now officially my favorite unit. Five of them slaughtered a unit of 15 Dwarf Warriors led by a Thane on the charging turn. With eight S4 and eight S5 attacks on a charge, these guys are probably the most significant threat in my army. I encountered the usual troubles with animosity, but it wasn't as debilitating as it's been in the past. This was at least in some part due to my forces having to cross a stream in the middle of the battlefield, which slowed down my advance considerably and kept the squabbling troops from falling too far behind. My fanatics once again fizzled like a wet firecracker. One managed to kill itself on the turn it was released. Another didn't get anywhere near its target, and the third hit a unit of Slayers but only inflicted three hits out of a possible twelve (Mad-Cap Mushrooms). The two surviving Fanatics promptly died on the following turn. I think I did more damage with randomly bouncing squigs! So, not everything clicked perfectly, which I suppose is a good thing. You can never rely on every element of your army working as planned, particularly when dealing with Greenskins, so you want to create an army that has a chance for success even if some units fall short of their full potential. This list seems to work farily well, at least against Dwarves, so I expect to be sticking with it for some time to come. |
