Battle Report: October 4, 2002
Opponent: Dwarfs
Army Size: 1500 Points
Result: Victory (Marginal Victory)

Given this only qualified as a marginal win by a measly 29 victory points, I'm actually more inclined to consider it a draw. Apart from a roughly 60% intact block of Big 'Uns and a couple of artillery pieces, my army was pretty much routed. A pyrrhic victory, to say the least, but not really all that bad considering I was facing a 100% defensive Dwarf army loaded with artillery.

This was, for the most part, a fairly straightforward battle. Some key turning points and amusing events: My opponent's Flame Cannon misfired and exploded early in the game, allowing me to breathe a rather hearty sigh of relief. That thing has been my bane since the first time I faced it. And by far my favorite moment - my Spear Chukka successfully broadsided a regiment of Dwarf Warriors and skewered its way through all five ranks! Dwarf kebabs, anyone?

It had been quite some time since I'd last fought Dwarfs (nearly six months, in fact), and I'd forgotten how hard it is to kill the little buggers. Sure, I have plenty of toughness 4 troops of my own, but not with 3+ armor saves! While my army did more or less manage to hold its own, mainly thanks to my Shamans (who both survived the battle, by some miracle) and artillery, I'm finding my troops hard pressed to stand up to most other types of infantry in a head-on fight. I've continually suggested that I need to add more flank support to cancel rank bonuses, but for some reason have refused to take my own advice. It took a supporting unit of Wolf Riders to help my Big 'Uns wipe out a block of Longbeards in this battle, and that's exactly the sort of tactics I need to employ if I want to have any hope of succeeding against opponents with better infantry.

Next time out, I'll be trying a retooled army with three small units of Wolf Riders. This means dropping the Squig Herd, but I think it's a bit too unreliable to be fielding at 1500 points anyhow. It will no doubt be making a reappearance in larger armies though, as it's far too much fun to leave on the shelf collecting dust.
