Welcome to SmartWave

For the past decade, we have seen a huge increase in public awareness and diagnosis of attention deficit disorder and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder. Along with this growth in awareness has come new treatments to deal with the problems these disorders present. Some of these treatments include behaviour modification, regulation of diet, and most commonly, drug therapy.

These therapies have all shown positive results with varying degrees of effectiveness. The most popular treatment to emerge in the past ten years has been the use of psychostimulants, the best known ones being Ritalin and Dexedrine.

Psychostimulants have been proven to reduce the symptoms of A.D.D./A.D.H.D. in a large percentage of patients who use them. However, there have been a number of side effects noted with the use of psychostimulants, including insomnia, the loss of appetite, and subsequent reduced body growth. As well, often A.D.D./A.D.H.D. symptoms return very soon after the drugs are discontinued.

As a result, there has been a need for a different therapy for A.D.D./A.D.H.D., one that is effective, has no side effects, and has long lasting results. That treatment has been evolving for the past 25 years, and is known as Neurofeedback, or EEG biofeedback.

Neurofeedback uses an EEG sensor and a computer to monitor a patient’s brainwave activity, and then trains the patient to activate the brain to produce faster waves. Faster brainwaves are associated with attention and concentration. Over time (usually 40 - 60 sessions), the patient learns how to "turn on" their brain, and thus pay attention to tasks they must do in everyday life (i.e., school, work, etc.)

One of the difficulties with Neurofeedback traditionally has been that it is quite expensive, as you must pay a clinician to administer the training sessions at his or her office, usually over the course of six months to a year. Often, a full Neurofeedback treatment for A.D.D. can cost as much as $5000.00.

This is where SMARTWAVE comes in. Operating out of Calgary, Alberta, We are Canada’s pioneer in client-centered Neurofeedback therapy. Our system allows you to deliver EEG feedback to yourself or your child in your own home at your own convenience. Once you have been trained how to use the equipment and software by our chartered psychologist, Dr. Tom Brown, we will set it up in your home to use whenever you wish.

It is in this way that SMARTWAVE is able to reduce the cost of EEG Neurofeedback to 1/3 or less of the usual price for this treatment.
