Just when you thought it was safe to say we can finally train out of the snow look what happens! Another late spring snowstorm to bury us. Once this ends it will be nice to train outside for more than 2-3 days at a time.

The Blazn Fast Ironman Group is set to go and is about to start a taper preparing for the June 8th race. Make sure you take a glance at www.ironmanlive.com on race day to check the team out. Race Bibs are assigned and available online and we will give an update on who to watch for where on race day.

Since we had good interest and there is more interest out there we have decided to enter at least one and maybe more teams in the Cross Calgary Relay. Anyone interested in running should contact me via email at blaznfast@aol.com

Take care out there and remember to think Blazn Fast!

Feature Article

In the spirit of Ironman this article is on setting seat height for your roadbike.

1) With your back against a wall and feet pedal distance width apart measure your inseam height from floor (best to use a hardbound book against the wall at right angles and push it upwards towards your crotch and mark the wall where the top of the book is).

2) Repeat step 1 two more times and take the average of the three (I know mine never was exactly the same)

3) Multiply that average by .889

4) Measure the distance in step 3 from the center of the crank to the top of the seat midway from the front and back edges of the seat.

5) Adjust the seat post height and middle to that location along the rear seat tube.

Use the members training log area to track your training and lets see how the progress goes.

Race Reports

This ezine we have two reports for you: The Red Deer Marathon and the Masters Decathlon

Red Deer Marathon - May 19, 2002 (as reported by Bernie)

Under the rain on race Bernie took to his first marathon without first doing a swim and a bike (Notice how it "always" seems to rain when Bernie races, make your race schedule alternate accordingly - Editors note) and he was looking to continue the success after his Banff Calgary leg. Bernie followed the advice of being conservative up front and ran 51+ minutes over the first 10K on his goal to run 3:30-3:40 and slightly picked that up to 49+ minutes through the second 10K. The third 10K as the race progressed saw Bernie run 50 minutes and then once they went offroad in the trails the rain had made the path mucky. Battling the muck for 4K slowed Bernie's speed but not his enthusiasm as he managed to finish in a deserved 3:38 when many seasoned runners were 4-10 minutes slower than expected. We also congratulate Gary on yet another 50+ Age Group 1st place as he ran 3:10 to win the category and place 10th Overall

Masters Decathlon - May 12th and 13th (as reported by Erik)

Despite never have attempted the pole vault, let alone a decathlon Erik took to expand his track experience in the event often touted as the World's Best Athlete. The Decathlon begins on Day 1 with a 100m sprint which Erik enjoyed one of his strengths and set a PR with a 13.5 (pretty fast for a master eh?). The 100m was followed by the Long Jump in which Erik jumped 4.20 and then came the shot put where Erik recorded an 8.90 throw. The second last event on Day 1 is the High Jump (1.33 m) and the last event in Day 1 was Erik's strong event of the day, the 400m , in which he ran another PR at 61.7.

Day 2 begins with the 110H (22.19), then the discus (20.5) and the pole vault in which Erik made a valiant stab 3 times just missing the starting height. The Javelin (17.39) proceeds the final event the dreaded 1500m for most decathletes but clearly Erik's best event as he finished third, scored his highest points and ran 5:13. Erik shows us all its never too late to try something new and we wish him continued luck in his masters track events. Erik finished second in the masters grand prix scoring for indoor this last season and we know he will continue to remind us all that Blazn Fast is a state of mind.
