A Personal Commentary I recently read a newspaper commentary validating homosexuality based on Dr. Bruce Begemihl’s book, "Biological Exuberance: Animal Homosexuality and Natural Diversity." Now, regardless as to our views on the gay lifestyle, it seems quite strange to me for anyone to promote or condemn any behaviour based entirely on the actions of critters. Imagine a liberal society in which we greeted each other as dogs do. If we became excited, one could just follow the canine lead and grab onto the nearest leg. We could end divorce by following the example of the Praying Mantis, where their sexual union concludes with the female devouring the head of the male. While whales, bison, elephants, lions, koalas, antelopes, giraffes, and gorillas are all reported to engage in homosexual behaviour, I have yet to identify the religion of any of these creatures. What are their credos and principles? Many animals abandon their weak to die, but I’m not quite willing to embrace this just yet. As for procreating, not all animals bring flowers, seek consent, or even bother to try and get you drunk first. The law of the jungle rules in the wild kingdom, yet I’m willing to bet that the more civilized among us would not wish to endorse such brutish behaviour just because "animals do it." Then again, are we ourselves animals or something more enlightened? Whether you believe humans are spiritual beings or simply critters with big egos, I do hope we base our mores and values on something more substantial than just our observations of Simba, Lassie, and Jumbo.
