A Personal Commentary As I mark my 46th birthday, I cant help but compare my life with others who have reached this same milestone. It is just my luck that Tom Hanks and I are almost twins, except for the different parents, birth location, and the fact he is one day older. Tom was born in California, a few hours north of Hollywood. I was born in Alberta, a few minutes south of St. Albert. Tom sought fame and fortune through the dramatic arts. I forgot the fortune part and became a journalist. Tom has worked with actress Darryl Hannah while I have worked with Edmonton news anchor Darryl McIntyre. One was beautiful and one was in Lloydminster with me. Tom once played a character named Forrest Gump, while there are days where I actually am Forrest Gump. Tom grew up to be tall, lanky, with a healthy head of hair, while Im short, tubby, with a healthy head. He has won a pair of Oscars, while I like Oscar Meyers. Tom has been to the White House in Washington, DC, while Ive been to Willis Whites house in Fiske, Saskatchewan. He makes $20-million to do a picture, while I help my sons draw pictures for free. Im 46 with a wonderful wife, two sons, and an extended family that actually seem happy that Im alive. I have my health, food on the table, and a roof over my head. I live in a land where they will let just about anybody serve as Prime Minister or Governor General. While Tom might have the bigger bank account, I hope he is as rich as I am. Ron Thornton |
