A former aide to Governor General Lord Byng, Vanier was a former soldier who lost
his right leg in battle during World War I. He died in office.

A former Member of Parliament and High Commissioner to India, Michener was an avid
sportsman, athlete, and supporter of a nation-wide fitness program for adults.

Honourable Jules Leger (1973-1979)
A former ambassador to Mexico and a brother of Cardinal Paul-Emile Leger, he
suffered a stroke just six months into his term. He was greatly assisted by his wife
Gabrielle.

The youngest Canadian-born Governor General and the youngest of the past century.
Schreyer is a former Premier of Manitoba and High Commissioner to Austrailia.

This former journalist went on to become the first woman Speaker of the House of
Commons and Canada's first woman Governor General.

A former Member of Parliament and federal Cabinet Minister, Hnatyshyn opened up the
official Governor General's residence to visitors.

winning career as a television producer and journalist.
